1933, annus horribilis: Nazism rises, Adolf Hitler imposes himself, books banned by the regime are burned, opponents are imprisoned and killed, Jews are persecuted, and those who can escape. We are in a Berlin Cabaret, the most famous of the time, run by Erika Mann, the daughter of Nobel laureate Thomas Mann. While everything is burning, some are trying to think and build. Thus, the leading quantum theorists gathered to celebrate the German Nobel Prizes awarded to Heisenberg (retroactively in 1932) and Schrödinger (along with Paul Dirac in 1933). Among the attendees are two women: physicist Lise Meitner and Margrethe Bohr, the wife and collaborator of the scientist Niels.
On the occasion of World Quantum Day and the publication of the book Al Cabaret quantistico. Festa dei premi Nobel per la fisica a Berlino (At the Quantum Cabaret. The Nobel Prize Celebration for Physics in Berlin) by Franco Pollini and Gino Tarozzi (Carocci, Rome 2024), there will be a discussion with scholars from different disciplines and the public, integrating reflections with theatrical readings from the book.
